First thing that strikes me funny about my own list is that two of the movies spoof the horror classic, Frankenstein, arguably the causer of more nightmares than all the Bush presidencies combined! (well, not really) Notice also I used the word “funniest” and not “comedies”. I wanted to make a list of films where I needed an EMT with oxygen after the credits (especially Aiplane! And yes, Leon is still getting larger…) There are so many brilliant comedies: the many films of directors Billy Wider, Woody Allen, Mel Brooks; anything with Laurel and Hardy and nothing with David Spade or Adam Sandler (ooh, age bias, yippee!); Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, W.C. Fields, Jerry Lewis (yes, Jerry Lewis) my list could on for pages! What about yours? http://www.afi.com/tvevents/100years/laughs.aspx

There was a #11 that Jim and I talked about but it just couldn’t squeeze into the top ten, but it did need mentioning. A Fish Called Wanda. Parts of that movie make me wheeze. They would take away my comedy card if I didn’t mention then insane fellas of Monty Python, two of whom were in Wanda. And then there’s Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Hey, Python is like improvisational jazz and quantum physics. Either you get it, or you don’t. Get it?

My summer viewiew list (remember summer reading list from grade school?) includes watching EVERY episode of Monty Python’s Flying Circus, IN ORDER, all four seasons. Oh sure, go ahead, make fun, but you’re going to get tired of BIG BROTHER XXXIV or any Pretty People/Teen Angst show on the CW (or W.C.). Why not Netlix www.netflix.com or Hulu www.hulu.com your way to Tootsie, Arsenic and Old Lace, or Arthur. Head to your local video store and demand to laugh!

Tell them I’m sick of watching war on the news, so give me Dr. Stragelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. Hey, if the world’s is gonna end, I want Peter Sellers making me laugh while it is happening.

So, turn up the a.c., turn down the lights and somebody get the damn Jiffy Pop off the stove, you’re favorite funny movie is about to start. Hey, what’s your favorite funny movie?
